4 Days in Hobart: First-Time Visitor Itinerary

Base yourself on or near the waterfront — everything in this plan works from a single Hobart base, unlike our 7-day and 2-week Tasmania itineraries, which move around the island. Hobart Airport is about 18 km from the city; SkyBus's Hobart Express runs directly to several CBD stops roughly every 30 minutes, and it's about a 15-minute drive by taxi or rideshare.

    4 days
    Total distance
~50 km if you add kunanyi/Mount Wellington by road
    Season
Year-round, but genuinely variable — Hobart can have four seasons in a day regardless of month. December–March is the most reliable for mild weather; kunanyi/Mount Wellington's summit can see snow at any time of year, though it's more common June–September.
    Vehicle
Central Hobart — the waterfront, Salamanca and Battery Point — is entirely walkable, and MONA is reachable by ferry without a car. A car (or a tour) is the practical way to reach the kunanyi/Mount Wellington summit, since there's no regular public bus route to the top.

    Base: Hobart. Nearby destinations: Richmond.

Pack layers regardless of season — Hobart's weather is genuinely changeable, and kunanyi/Mount Wellington's summit, only about 20 minutes from the city, can be 10°C colder and windy or snow-dusted when the waterfront is calm and mild. Check current road and weather conditions before driving up; the summit road can close in severe weather.

Four days is enough to do Hobart properly without needing to change accommodation once — the waterfront, the mountain, MONA and one further option all work as day trips from a single base.

Day 1Arrive HobartSkyBus or taxi from the airport. Settle in, then Salamanca Place and Battery Point on foot — sandstone warehouses, Saturday's Salamanca Market if your dates line up, and Constitution Dock.Hobart

Check current conditions before you go — the road can be closed by snow, ice or high wind, more often in winter but not exclusively.Hobart
Day 3MONA~12 km by ferry or roadThe MONA ROMA ferry from Brooke Street Pier is the classic approach — scenic, and part of the experience — though a bus or car works too. Budget the better part of a day; the collection is large and deliberately disorienting.Hobart

Port Arthur is a full day given the drive, and this itinerary can only give it a taste — our 7-day and 2-week Tasmania itineraries cover it properly if that's the priority.

    Cost and booking notes

    • MONA entry is ticketed for most visitors — Tasmanian residents get free entry, and current pricing and any concessions are worth checking before you book.
    • Salamanca Market runs Saturdays only — plan day 1 or day 4 around it if you want to catch it.
    • Snow chains are occasionally required on the Mount Wellington summit road in winter — check current conditions rather than assuming the road is clear.

    Common questions

Not for the waterfront, Salamanca and Battery Point, which are all walkable, or for MONA, which has a dedicated ferry. A car or a tour is the practical way to reach the kunanyi/Mount Wellington summit, since there's no regular public bus to the top.

Yes, in normal conditions — it's about a 20–30 minute drive from central Hobart. The summit road can close in poor weather, more often in winter, so check current conditions before you go rather than assuming it's open.

Enough for the city itself — the waterfront, Mount Wellington and MONA — without changing accommodation once. It's not enough to also properly cover the east coast or the west; those are what our 7-day and 2-week Tasmania itineraries are for.
