Itinerary
First Time in Australia: 2 Weeks — Sydney, Uluru & the Reef
This is the classic first-Australia-trip shape: a big harbour city, the outback centre, and the tropical reef coast — three genuinely different Australias in one plan. It only works because Ayers Rock Airport has direct flights to both Sydney and Cairns, so you're not backtracking through a fourth city to connect them.
- Length
- 14 days
- Total distance
- Three flight legs; minimal driving
- Season
- May–September gives the best conditions in the Red Centre and the driest weather up north. Sydney is workable year-round.
- Vehicle
- No car needed in Sydney. A hire car is useful for a day or two in the Red Centre and optional around Port Douglas.
- Suits
- First-Time, Couples, Family

Trip progression
Main route: Sydney → Yulara → Cairns → Port Douglas. Side destinations: Katoomba, Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Daintree Village, Cape Tribulation, Mossman Gorge, Kuranda. Includes flights between regions — map shows the trip sequence, not a driving route. Shown for planning only — this is not a turn-by-turn route.

Main route: Sydney → Yulara → Cairns → Port Douglas. Side destinations: Katoomba, Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Daintree Village, Cape Tribulation, Mossman Gorge, Kuranda.
Fourteen days is tight for three regions. This plan gives Sydney four days, the Red Centre four days and tropical North Queensland six days — if any one of those feels short once you're there, it's Sydney, since it's the region you're most likely to have some passing familiarity with already.
Book the two domestic legs (Sydney–Ayers Rock, Ayers Rock–Cairns) early. Direct flight frequency on both routes is real but limited compared to the main east-coast corridors, and fares climb fast as the flight fills.
Day by day
| Days | Route | Distance | Drive | What you do | Sleep |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrive Sydney | — | — | Settle in. Circular Quay, the Opera House forecourt and the Harbour Bridge at dusk. | Sydney |
| Day 2 | Sydney | local | — | Bondi to Coogee coastal walk (6 km, about 2 hours), swim at Bondi if the flags are up. | Sydney |
| Day 3 | Blue Mountains day trip | ~100 km | 2h train each way | Train from Sydney Central to Katoomba. The Grand Canyon Track (6.3 km loop from Evans Lookout, about 3 hours) is a better use of the day than the Three Sisters viewing platform alone. | Sydney |
| Day 4 | Sydney → fly to Yulara (Ayers Rock) | ~2,950 km (air) | ~3h flight | Morning free in Sydney — Taronga Zoo or a harbour ferry — then an afternoon flight to Ayers Rock Airport. Collect a hire car on arrival. | Yulara |
| Day 5 | Uluru | 40 km local | — | Base walk at sunrise — 10.6 km, about 3.5 hours, flat. Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre through the heat of the day, sunset viewing area in the evening. | Yulara |
| Day 6 | Kata Tjuta | 100 km return | 1h | Sunrise viewing platform, then the Valley of the Winds walk — 7.4 km full circuit, closed above 36°C from 11am. | Yulara |
| Day 7 | Yulara → fly to Cairns | ~2,450 km (air) | ~2h 30m flight | Direct flight, Ayers Rock to Cairns. Arrive tropical North Queensland — the Cairns Esplanade lagoon is an easy first stop. | Cairns |
| Day 8 | Cairns → Port Douglas | ~70 km | 1h | The Captain Cook Highway hugs the coast the whole way — one of the country's more scenic hour-long drives. Four Mile Beach in the afternoon. | Port Douglas |
| Day 9 | Outer Great Barrier Reef day trip | by boat | — | Reef trips from Port Douglas or Cairns run $220–$300 per adult plus the Environmental Management Charge. Book the smaller-vessel option if anyone in the group gets seasick. | Port Douglas |
| Day 10 | Daintree Rainforest & Cape Tribulation | ~110 km return | 3h return incl. ferry | The Daintree River ferry queues badly between 9am and 11am — cross earlier. Swim only in the signed freshwater holes; estuarine crocodiles are present in the river and coastal creeks. | Port Douglas |
| Day 11 | Mossman Gorge | ~20 km | 30m | Shuttle bus in from the visitor centre (private vehicles are restricted at the gorge itself). Circuit walk and swimming holes in the rainforest. | Port Douglas |
| Day 12 | Port Douglas → Cairns | ~70 km | 1h | Return drive, drop the hire car if you took one. Free afternoon — Cairns Esplanade, markets if timing lines up. | Cairns |
| Day 13 | Kuranda Scenic Railway or Skyrail | ~25 km | — | Either the historic railway or the cableway up through the rainforest to Kuranda village — most people do one up and the other down if time allows. | Cairns |
| Day 14 | Depart Cairns | — | — | Fly home. | — |
Cost and booking notes
- Book the Sydney–Ayers Rock and Ayers Rock–Cairns flights as early as possible — direct services on both routes run several times a week, not several times a day, and fares rise quickly as each flight fills.
- A national park entry pass is required for Uluru-Kata Tjuta, valid three consecutive days.
- Reef day trips carry the Environmental Management Charge on top of the ticket price — a small statutory fee applied to every Great Barrier Reef tour.
- Three separate flight legs means three separate baggage and check-in buffers — build at least two hours into each connection, more over a domestic-to-domestic change at an unfamiliar airport.
