5 Days: Canberra & the Snowy Mountains Itinerary

This works as a summer walking trip or a winter snow trip — it is not designed purely as a ski itinerary. The structure (Canberra, then Jindabyne as a base for two nights) holds either way; only the third day's activity changes with the season.

    Length
    5 days
    Total distance
    ~360 km round trip
    Season
Genuinely a year-round trip. December–March suits walking, wildflowers and mountain-river swimming; June–September is the snow season, with skiing at Thredbo and Perisher and a different set of road rules.
    Vehicle
Any 2WD to Jindabyne and Thredbo village year-round — both are sealed. Within the declared NSW snow season, carrying chains is required in signed alpine areas regardless of vehicle type.

Route stops in order: 1. Canberra, 2. Jindabyne.

Jindabyne, not Thredbo or Perisher, is the practical base — it has the most accommodation and services, and both ski villages are a manageable day-trip distance away.

Weather at altitude changes fast, in any season. A clear, mild morning at Jindabyne can be cold, windy and closed-in on the Kosciuszko summit a few hours later — check the forecast for the plateau specifically, not just the valley towns.

    Cost and booking notes

    • A Kosciuszko National Park vehicle entry pass is required year-round and costs more during the declared snow season, when it typically bundles resort access.
    • Thredbo and Perisher accommodation books out well ahead for the snow season — reserve months in advance for a winter trip.
    • Snow chains can be hired in Cooma or Jindabyne on the way up if you don't own a set — don't wait until you're at the mountain to sort this out.

    Common questions

No — it's built to work in both seasons. The Thredbo chairlift and Kosciuszko summit walk run through the warmer months, and Jindabyne itself is a genuine four-season base. Only the specific day-3 activity changes between a walk and a ski day.

A 2WD reaches Jindabyne and Thredbo village year-round on sealed roads. Within the declared snow season, carrying chains is a legal requirement in signed alpine areas for every vehicle, not just those without snow tyres.

About 180 km via Cooma, roughly 2h15m of driving. It's a comfortable single-leg drive, not a trip that needs breaking into two days.
