7 Days: Sydney, Blue Mountains & Hunter Valley Itinerary

This combines three of our existing guides into one loop without repeating their day-by-day detail — see our 3 Days in Sydney, 4 Days in the Blue Mountains and Long Weekend in the Hunter Valley itineraries for the fuller version of each individual leg. This plan is the shape for travellers who want all three in one trip rather than three separate ones.

    Length
    7 days
    Total distance
~370 km round trip from Sydney
    Season
Year-round. September–November and March–May are the most comfortable across all three regions; December–February is hot in the Hunter and busy in Sydney; winter (June–August) brings genuinely cold, foggy mornings to the Blue Mountains, which can be spectacular or can hide the views entirely.
    Vehicle
Keep Sydney car-free and collect a hire car only when you leave for the Blue Mountains, not before. A car is a genuine liability in central Sydney — parking and tolls add up for no benefit — but becomes essential once you're outside the rail network, for the Blue Mountains' further-flung lookouts and especially for the Hunter, which has no useful public transport between cellar doors.

Route stops in order: 1. Sydney, 2. Katoomba, 3. Hunter Valley.

The travel logic: Sydney to the Blue Mountains is about 110 km, roughly 1h45m by car or 2 hours by train; the Blue Mountains to the Hunter Valley is a cross-country run of about 200 km, roughly 2h30m, that doesn't backtrack through Sydney. Collecting the hire car in the Blue Mountains rather than central Sydney avoids paying for a car you don't need for the first two days.

Wine touring and driving don't mix, the same as in our dedicated Hunter Valley itinerary — a private driver or small-group tour for the tasting day, self-drive only with a genuinely non-drinking driver in the group. Large sections of the Blue Mountains also burned in the 2019–20 bushfires, and some tracks have had closures or rerouting since — check current NSW National Parks status before you go rather than assuming an old guide is accurate.

    Cost and booking notes

    • Collecting the hire car in the Blue Mountains rather than central Sydney means two fewer days of parking and toll costs for a car you don't need in the city.
    • A private driver or small-group tour for the Hunter Valley tasting day costs more than self-driving but removes the drink-driving problem for the whole group, not just for whoever isn't drinking.
    • Book Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley accommodation ahead of a weekend departure — both regions are popular short-break destinations from Sydney and fill up on Fridays and Saturdays.

    Common questions

When you leave Sydney for the Blue Mountains, not before. A car is a genuine cost and hassle in central Sydney — parking and tolls — for zero benefit on the first two days, which are entirely walkable or ferry-based.

Our 3 Days in Sydney, 4 Days in the Blue Mountains and Long Weekend in the Hunter Valley itineraries each cover their region in more depth than this combined trip can. This loop is for travellers who want all three in one week rather than three separate trips, with the travel logistics between them worked out.

About 200 km, roughly 2h30m, on a cross-country route that doesn't require backtracking through Sydney — a genuine advantage of doing the two regions in this order rather than as separate day trips from the city.
