- High risk / cut
Open year-round with no seasonal closure of its own — the month grid here reflects typical summer heat, not flood risk. Flooding is a real, non-seasonal hazard that has closed sections of this route for weeks at a time (most notably in 2022–23) and can happen after sustained heavy rain at any time of year — check current conditions regardless of season.
Wildlife warning: do not drive at night
Wildlife is active at dawn and dusk on the rural sections between towns — kangaroos and wombats are common on this route.
Live road conditions
The character of the drive changes as you go: Echuca's paddle-steamer heritage and river red gum forests, Swan Hill's pioneer history, then Mildura and Renmark's irrigation-fed citrus and wine country as the landscape turns drier heading into South Australia.
The Murray floods periodically — most significantly in 2022–23, when major flooding closed roads and affected towns along parts of this route for weeks. Flooding here isn't on a predictable seasonal calendar the way a tropical wet season is, so check current road conditions directly before you travel rather than assuming a fixed pattern by month.
The stops, in driving order
- 01
Albury/Wodonga
0 km in · StartCritical supply point — Largest town on the route until Mildura — fill up and stock up here.
Twin border towns spanning the Victoria–NSW border, with full regional services before the drive downstream.
Tip: Fill up and stock up here — it's the largest town on the route until Mildura.
- 02
Echuca
241 km in · 2h 45mA historic Murray River port with the largest fleet of working paddle steamers anywhere in the world, centred on the restored Port of Echuca precinct.
Tip: A short paddle steamer cruise is the classic way to see the river here — book ahead in peak periods.
- 03
Swan Hill
401 km in · 1h 50mHome to the Pioneer Settlement, a large living-history museum recreating a 19th-century Murray River port town.
Tip: The Pioneer Settlement is a half-day easily, more if you take a paddle steamer cruise from the same site.
- 04
Mildura
674 km in · 3hCritical supply point — Last major full-service town before the South Australian border.
The heart of the Sunraysia irrigation district — citrus, table grapes and wine, sustained by Murray water diverted since the late 1800s.
Tip: Mildura is the last major town before the South Australian border — the largest full-service stop on the route from here to Renmark.
- 05
Renmark (Riverland, SA)
816 km in · 1h 35mThe gateway to South Australia's Riverland, another citrus-and-wine district fed by the Murray, and the end of this route.
Tip: A South Australian fruit-fly quarantine checkpoint operates on this border crossing — eat or bin fresh fruit and vegetables before you reach it.
Drive planning: legs, fuel and conditions
Three paces, same road: highway pace, a towing or 4WD rig, and what the day actually takes once fatigue and photo stops are in it.
| Leg | Distance | Standard vehicleHighway pace, no stops | Towing / 4WD rig90–100 km/h cruise | Realistic paceFatigue + photo stops | Fuel |

| Albury/Wodonga → Echuca | 241 km | 2h 45m | 3h 20m | 3h 30m | Yarrawonga, Echuca |

How we get these: standard is moving time at signposted highway pace. Rig time assumes a 90–100 km/h cruise and slower acceleration — roughly 20% longer. Realistic pace adds a 15-minute fatigue stop every two hours (the national driver-fatigue guidance) plus about ten minutes an hour for photos, fuel and legs. Plan daylight around the realistic column, not the standard one.

What can go wrong
- The Murray floods periodically and not on a predictable seasonal schedule. Check VicRoads, Transport for NSW and SA road authorities for current conditions before you travel, especially after heavy rain anywhere in the catchment.
- Summer heat is genuine inland, particularly at Mildura and Renmark, both in a semi-arid zone that regularly exceeds 40°C in January and February.
- A South Australian quarantine checkpoint applies fruit-fly restrictions on fresh produce entering the state — plan your last big grocery stop for Mildura, not the border.
- Wildlife is active at dawn and dusk on the rural sections between towns.
Conditions change seasonally and after storms. Check current conditions with the road authority before relying on any of this.
