Adelaide → Auburn → Clare → Burra → Adelaide

Clare Valley & Mid North Road Trip: the full drive guide

This is a shorter, separate loop from our Flinders Ranges & Outback SA road trip, which also opens with Adelaide to the Clare Valley but then continues north to Port Augusta and Marree as a one-way outback corridor. This route instead detours east to Burra's copper-mining heritage and returns to Adelaide — a wine-and-heritage weekend, not an outback drive.

    Distance
~340 km full loop from Adelaide
    Time needed
2 days minimum; 3 days lets you properly split the Clare Valley and Burra rather than rushing either
    Vehicle
    2WD suitable
    Surface
Fully sealed the entire way, including the Barrier Highway leg to Burra.
    Best months
September–November for mild days and wildflowers; March–April (vintage) for harvest energy in the Clare Valley. December–February brings genuine Mid North heat, routinely into the high 30s, and real bushfire risk on total fire ban days.

Open year-round with no seasonal closure — this is a fully sealed loop. December to February brings genuine Mid North heat, regularly into the high 30s, and real bushfire risk on total fire ban days.

Wildlife warning: do not drive at night

Kangaroos, emus and wombats are active at dawn and dusk on the rural roads throughout this loop, particularly the Clare-to-Burra leg.

    Live road conditions

The Clare Valley is presented here as a route stop, not a cellar-door directory — the Riesling Trail (a converted rail line between Auburn and Clare) is worth knowing about if you'd rather cycle between a few cellar doors than drive.

From Clare Valley or Burra, both our Flinders Ranges & Outback SA guide (via Port Augusta) and the Barossa (via Kapunda) are realistic onward options if you want to extend this into a longer South Australian trip rather than looping straight back to Adelaide.

    The stops, in driving order

    1. 01

      Adelaide

      0 km in · Start

Critical supply point — Full services before heading north.

The start, with full capital-city services before heading north.

Tip: Fill up here — fuel choice thins out once you're north of Gawler.

    2. 02

      Auburn

      110 km in · 1h 20m

The southern gateway to the Clare Valley and the start of the Riesling Trail, a flat, easy cycling route along a former rail corridor between here and Clare.

Tip: A good first cellar-door stop if you're spreading tastings across the day rather than concentrating them in Clare itself.

    3. 03

      Clare

      130 km in · 20m

Critical supply point — Restock here — Burra's services are more limited.

The valley's main town, with Sevenhill Cellars — South Australia's oldest winery, founded by Jesuit priests in the 1850s — among the historic cellar doors nearby.

Tip: Restock here — Burra's services are more limited than Clare's.

    4. 04

      Burra

      180 km in · 40m

A National Trust heritage town built on 19th-century copper mining, with one of the more intact historic mining townscapes in Australia — the Burra Mine site and the miners' dugout cottages along Burra Creek are the standouts.

Tip: The self-guided heritage trail (a passkey system covering multiple historic sites) is the practical way to see Burra properly — allow at least half a day for it.

    5. 05

      Adelaide

      340 km in · 1h 50m

Critical supply point — Full services before heading north.

The end of the loop, back via Riverton and the Gawler district.

Tip: This return leg is the longest single stretch on the loop — a sensible one to start early rather than after a full day in Burra.

Drive planning: legs, fuel and conditions

Three paces, same road: highway pace, a towing or 4WD rig, and what the day actually takes once fatigue and photo stops are in it.

How we get these: standard is moving time at signposted highway pace. Rig time assumes a 90–100 km/h cruise and slower acceleration — roughly 20% longer. Realistic pace adds a 15-minute fatigue stop every two hours (the national driver-fatigue guidance) plus about ten minutes an hour for photos, fuel and legs. Plan daylight around the realistic column, not the standard one.

    What can go wrong

    • Cellar-door tastings and driving don't mix — nominate a driver or spread tastings across more than one day, the same logic as the Adelaide Hills and Barossa.
    • Summer heat, December to February, regularly pushes into the high 30s across the Mid North, with genuine bushfire risk on total fire ban days — check Country Fire Service warnings before a summer visit.
    • Kangaroos, emus and wombats are active at dawn and dusk on the rural roads throughout this loop, particularly the Clare-to-Burra leg.
    • Burra's heritage sites keep set hours and some require the self-guided passkey to access — check current opening times before planning a tight schedule around them.

Conditions change seasonally and after storms. Check current conditions with the road authority before relying on any of this.

    Common questions

That route also starts Adelaide to Clare Valley, then continues north through Port Augusta to Marree as a one-way outback corridor of roughly 725 km. This is a shorter loop that detours east to Burra instead and returns to Adelaide — a wine-and-heritage weekend, not an outback drive.

It rewards a dedicated stop — the self-guided heritage trail covers original mine workings, miners' dugout cottages and a genuinely well-preserved 19th-century townscape. Treat it as at least a half-day, not a quick photo stop on the way back to Adelaide.

Yes — from the Clare Valley, our Flinders Ranges & Outback SA guide continues north via Port Augusta if you want to extend this into a longer trip rather than looping back to Adelaide.

No — every leg is sealed, including the Barrier Highway section to Burra. A standard 2WD covers the whole loop without issue.
