Itinerary
3 Weeks on the East Coast: Sydney to Cairns Itinerary
This is the classic Australian east coast trip, and it deliberately doesn't try to stop everywhere. Australia is large — Sydney to Cairns is around 3,000 km by road — and a three-week version of this trip needs real driving days and rest days built in, not a stop scheduled for every single day.
- Length
- 21 days
- Total distance
- ~3,000 km if driven in full; substantially less if you fly the central Queensland gap
- Season
- May–October gives the most reliable weather across the whole route and avoids the worst of the wet season and marine stinger season up north. Sydney and the NSW coast work well most of the year.
- Vehicle
- Any 2WD the entire way — this route is fully sealed. The real decision isn't vehicle type, it's whether to drive the whole distance or fly the long, sparsely-interesting stretch between the Sunshine Coast and the Whitsundays.
- Suits
- First-Time, Couples, Friends Group
- Route style
- Point-to-point

Route map
Approximate route: Sydney → Port Stephens → Port Macquarie → Coffs Harbour → Byron Bay → Gold Coast → Brisbane → Noosa → Airlie Beach → Townsville → Cairns. Shown for planning only — this is not a turn-by-turn route. Always check current road conditions before you travel.

Route stops in order: 1. Sydney, 2. Port Stephens, 3. Port Macquarie, 4. Coffs Harbour, 5. Byron Bay, 6. Gold Coast, 7. Brisbane, 8. Noosa, 9. Airlie Beach, 10. Townsville, 11. Cairns.
This complements rather than duplicates our 10 Days on the East Coast itinerary, which covers Sydney to Byron Bay in much greater depth. Use that one if the NSW coast is your main interest; use this one for the full Sydney-to-Cairns shape.
The honest structural choice on this trip is what to do about the gap between the Sunshine Coast and the Whitsundays — roughly 990 km of central Queensland coast that is mostly a transit corridor. Flying that segment (Sunshine Coast or Brisbane to Whitsunday Coast Airport) is a genuinely sensible option for travellers who don't want two extra long driving days, and this itinerary presents it as the default rather than an afterthought.
Day by day
| Days | Route | Distance | Drive | What you do | Sleep |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Days 1–4 | Sydney | — | — | Harbour, the Opera House, Bondi to Coogee coastal walk, and a Blue Mountains day trip (see our dedicated 4-day Blue Mountains itinerary if you want to extend this leg). | Sydney |
| Days 5–6 | Sydney → Port Stephens | 220 km | 2h 45m | Whale watching (May–November) or dolphin cruises year-round, and the Stockton sand dunes. | Port Stephens |
| Day 7 | Port Stephens → Port Macquarie | 250 km | 3h | The Koala Hospital and Tacking Point Lighthouse. | Port Macquarie |
| Day 8 | Port Macquarie → Coffs Harbour | 158 km | 1h 40m | A shorter driving day — Coffs Harbour's Big Banana and the Muttonbird Island walk. | Coffs Harbour |
| Days 9–10 | Coffs Harbour → Byron Bay | 235 km | 2h 30m | The Cape Byron lighthouse walk and Wategos Beach. Our 10 Days on the East Coast itinerary covers this NSW stretch in much more depth if you want to slow down here. | Byron Bay |
| Day 11 | Byron Bay → Gold Coast | 95 km | 1h 20m | Surfers Paradise and, if travelling with kids, the first of Queensland's theme parks. | Gold Coast |
| Day 12 | Gold Coast → Brisbane | 85 km | 1h 15m | South Bank Parklands and the riverside precinct. | Brisbane |
| Days 13–14 | Brisbane → Sunshine Coast | ~120 km | 1h 30m | Noosa Main Beach and Noosa National Park's coastal walk. | Sunshine Coast (Noosa) |
| Days 15–16 | Sunshine Coast → Whitsundays (fly or drive) | ~990 km | 2 long days driving, or a ~2h flight | The central Queensland coast between here and the Whitsundays is mostly a transit corridor. Flying from the Sunshine Coast or Brisbane to Whitsunday Coast Airport saves two driving days for time on the water instead; driving runs via Rockhampton and Mackay on the Bruce Highway if you'd rather see the coast in between. | Airlie Beach |
| Days 17–19 | Whitsundays & Airlie Beach | by boat | — | A multi-day Whitsundays sailing trip covering Whitehaven Beach and the Hill Inlet lookout. Our dedicated 10 Days in the Whitsundays & Airlie Beach itinerary covers this region at a much more relaxed pace if you have the extra time. | Airlie Beach |
| Day 20 | Airlie Beach → Townsville & Magnetic Island | 278 km | 3h 15m | Townsville's Strand, and a ferry across to Magnetic Island for its koala colony and beaches if you have the extra day. | Townsville |
| Day 21 | Townsville → Cairns | 350 km | 4h | Arrive tropical North Queensland. If you have more time, our 5 Days in Port Douglas & the Daintree itinerary picks up from here. | — |
Cost and booking notes
- A one-way hire car (Sydney pickup, Cairns drop-off) carries a substantial relocation fee. Price it against flying home from Cairns and separately returning for a round-trip car, or against hiring separate cars for named regional legs.
- Flying the Sunshine Coast-to-Whitsundays gap typically costs less in total time and often not much more in dollars than two extra driving days plus their fuel and accommodation — run the actual numbers before assuming driving is cheaper.
- Reef day trips and Whitsundays sailing trips both carry the Environmental Management Charge on top of the ticket price.
