Itinerary

4 Days in Brisbane: First-Time Visitor Itinerary

Base yourself in or near the CBD or South Bank — everything in this plan is a short walk, ferry or train ride away. The Airtrain runs directly from the airport terminals to CBD stations in about 20 minutes, and it's genuinely the practical option rather than a fallback.

    Length
    4 days
    Total distance
Minimal driving — a train, ferry and walking itinerary, with an optional day-trip drive
    Season
Year-round, subtropical. September–November and April–May are the most comfortable; December–February is hot, humid and carries genuine storm season risk — sudden severe thunderstorms and hail are a real possibility, not just a forecast footnote.
    Vehicle
No car needed for the city itself — the Airtrain, CityCat ferries and Brisbane's compact CBD cover everything in this plan. A car (or a tour) only earns its cost on the optional day-trip day, out toward the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast.

Brisbane's CityCat ferries are worth treating as an attraction, not just transport — the river is the spine of the city, and gliding past South Bank, Kangaroo Point and New Farm on the water is a better introduction than any bus route covers.

December to February brings real storm season, not just heat — sudden, severe thunderstorms and hail are a genuine possibility, and outdoor plans on those days need a fallback. September to November and April to May are the more settled shoulder seasons.

    Cost and booking notes

    • QAGOMA's general collection is free; ticketed touring exhibitions are extra.
    • South Bank's Streets Beach lagoon is free and patrolled — no cost beyond whatever you spend on food nearby.
    • CityCat, bus and train fares are all on the one Translink ticketing system — no separate ferry fare to plan around.

    Common questions

No, not for the city itself — the Airtrain, CityCat ferries and Translink's bus and train network cover everything in this itinerary. A car only becomes useful for a day trip beyond the city, such as the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast.

Yes — they're on the same Translink ticketing as buses and trains, and the river route past South Bank, Kangaroo Point and New Farm is a genuinely scenic way to get around, not just a novelty.

The Gold Coast for beaches and theme parks, or the Sunshine Coast for a quieter coastal option — see our South East Queensland and Sunshine Coast & K'gari itineraries for full versions of either, rather than trying to improvise one in a single day from this plan.
