    5 Days Kakadu & Litchfield from Darwin: A Fast Fly-Drive Itinerary

    Built for travellers with five days, not seven: a long weekend plus a couple of days' leave, a Top End add-on to a southern trip, or anyone who has already done Darwin and wants the parks rather than the city. The trade-off is pace — early starts, one genuinely long driving day, and Litchfield cut down to a few hours.

    May–October (dry season) only. The November–April wet floods roads and shuts swimming holes, and this plan's single long transit day would be unworkable then.

    Any 2WD. Every stop — Fogg Dam, Ubirr, Nourlangie, Yellow Water and Litchfield's Florence Falls — is on a 2WD road. Jim Jim and Twin Falls need a 4WD and are closed through 2026 for works in any case (reopening planned for the 2027 dry season; check with Parks Australia).

    It reverses our 7 Days Kakadu & Litchfield loop. You drive out on the Arnhem Highway on arrival day, spend two full days in Kakadu (a night at Jabiru for the north of the park, then Cooinda for Yellow Water), and come back via Pine Creek with Litchfield as a stop on the way to Darwin. If Kakadu isn't the priority, our 5 Days in Darwin itinerary makes the city the trip, with Litchfield as an easy day out.

    The crocodile rule is the same on any Top End trip: every waterway can hold a saltwater crocodile, so swim only where a managed swimming area is signed as open.

    Cost and booking notes

    • A Kakadu park pass is required and priced seasonally — buy it online before you arrive, since you'll be entering the park on day one.
    • Picking up and dropping off the car at Darwin Airport keeps this a return hire, with no one-way fees.
    • Two Kakadu bases means two bookings. Cooinda is the more limited of the two, so secure that night first, particularly around the July school holidays.

    Common questions

    The 7-day loop goes Litchfield first with two nights there, then three nights in Kakadu, and keeps drives short. This plan reverses the direction, goes straight to Kakadu, gives it two full days, and treats Litchfield as a stop on one long drive back to Darwin. It covers the essentials of both parks in two fewer days, at the cost of a faster pace.

    Day 4: roughly 470 km from Cooinda to Darwin via Pine Creek and Litchfield, about 5h 45m of driving before stops. Start early, fuel at Pine Creek, and avoid driving after dark, when wildlife and wandering stock are on the roads.

    Yes. Every road in this plan is 2WD-accessible in the dry season, so a standard sedan or SUV is fine. Check your rental agreement for any unsealed-road restrictions if you plan to add side trips.

    It's enough for the headline sites — Ubirr, Nourlangie, Yellow Water and a Litchfield swim — if you're comfortable with early starts. If you want time to slow down, or to swim at more than one Litchfield waterfall, the 7-day version is the better fit.
