7 Days Kakadu & Litchfield: A Relaxed Top End Loop from Darwin
The slow way to see the Top End: short driving days, two nights in each park area before moving on, and time to be at Ubirr and Yellow Water when the light and wildlife are at their best. It suits families who need swim breaks, first-timers who'd rather see fewer places properly, and photographers.

- May–October (dry season) only. From November to April the wet floods roads, closes 4WD tracks and many swimming holes, and brings heavy humidity — this loop isn't written for it.

- 2WD reaches everything in this plan: Litchfield's falls and termite mounds, and Kakadu's Ubirr, Nourlangie, Yellow Water and Cahills Crossing. A 4WD is only needed for sites this plan skips — Jim Jim and Twin Falls (closed for all of 2026 for works, with reopening planned for the 2027 dry season; confirm with Parks Australia), Gunlom's upper pools and some Litchfield side tracks.

The loop runs Darwin to Litchfield first, across to Kakadu via Pine Creek rather than doubling back through Darwin, then home on the Arnhem Highway. Only two days involve more than two hours at the wheel. If you only have five days, our 5 Days: Kakadu & Litchfield from Darwin plan runs the same parks in reverse at a much faster pace.
Treat every Top End waterway as saltwater crocodile habitat, however small or clear it looks. Swim only in signed, managed swimming areas that are currently open — rangers close them without warning after a sighting.

Cost and booking notes
- A Kakadu park pass is required and priced seasonally. Buy it online before you go and keep proof of purchase with you in the park.
- Litchfield has no entry fee, which offsets some of the Kakadu pass cost on this longer loop.
- This plan uses three bases — Batchelor (two nights), Cooinda (two) and Jabiru (one). Kakadu beds are the ones that sell out, especially around the July school holidays, so book those first.

No. Every stop in this plan is on a sealed or well-maintained 2WD road. You'd only need a 4WD for Jim Jim Falls, Twin Falls, Gunlom's upper pools and a few Litchfield side tracks — and Jim Jim and Twin Falls are closed for 2026 anyway.
It's a genuine trade-off. The waterfalls run at full force in the wet and the park is nearly empty, but Jim Jim and Twin Falls close to vehicles, several roads flood, and most swimming holes shut for crocodile management. This itinerary is written for the dry season specifically.
Only at signed, managed swimming areas that are currently open — in Litchfield, that typically means Buley Rockhole, Florence Falls and Wangi Falls once cleared for the season. Closures happen without notice after a crocodile sighting, and no unsigned waterway is safe, however shallow or clear it looks.
