5 Days: NSW South Coast — Sydney to Jervis Bay Itinerary

This follows much of the same road as our Grand Pacific Drive route guide, but at a slower, day-by-day holiday pace rather than a single long day trip — use that guide for the road logistics and honest timings, and this itinerary for how to actually spread it across a week.

    Length
    5 days
    Total distance
~330 km round trip from Sydney
    Season
Year-round. September–November is the standout — mild weather, whales on the way north, and fewer crowds than summer. December–February is hot and the busiest with summer holidays; winter (June–August) is quieter and still comfortable for walking, just too cold for most people to swim.
    Vehicle
A hire car is genuinely useful for this trip — the coast south of Wollongong has only patchy train coverage, and Jervis Bay itself has no train at all. Collect a car when you leave Sydney rather than keeping one in the city for the first part of your trip.

Route stops in order: 1. Sydney, 2. Wollongong, 3. Huskisson.

Base yourself twice, not more: Wollongong or Kiama for the first night, then Huskisson or Vincentia at Jervis Bay for the rest of the trip, rather than day-tripping the whole coast from Sydney and back.

Swim between the flags at patrolled beaches — the coast north of Jervis Bay faces the open Pacific and can have genuine surf and rips, while Jervis Bay's own beaches, sheltered inside the bay, are generally calmer but still deserve the same care.

Day 1Sydney → Royal National Park → Wollongong~85 km1h 30mCollect the hire car and head south through the Royal National Park — Australia's oldest — then the Sea Cliff Bridge at Coalcliff. Settle into Wollongong with the afternoon free for Flagstaff Point and the harbour.Wollongong
Day 2Wollongong → Kiama → Jervis Bay~95 km1h 30mThe Kiama Blowhole en route — it only performs with a decent swell, so check conditions rather than expecting a guaranteed show. Settle into a Huskisson or Vincentia base at Jervis Bay by the afternoon.Huskisson / Vincentia
Day 3Jervis BaylocalHyams Beach, with its famously white sand, and Booderee National Park — a Commonwealth-managed park jointly run with the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community, with its own separate entry fee from NSW parks. A dolphin-watching cruise runs from Huskisson if you'd rather be on the water.Huskisson / Vincentia

    Cost and booking notes

    • Royal National Park charges a daily vehicle entry fee at staffed entrances such as Audley.
    • Booderee National Park at Jervis Bay is Commonwealth-managed and has its own separate entry fee — a NSW National Parks pass doesn't cover it.
    • Jervis Bay accommodation books out over summer and long weekends — reserve well ahead if travelling in that window.

    Common questions

Yes, practically speaking — train coverage south of Wollongong is patchy and Jervis Bay has none at all. Collect a hire car when you leave Sydney rather than trying to do this trip car-free.

Yes — it's about 2h30m each way, but Hyams Beach's sand and Booderee National Park's mix of beaches and bushland are genuinely different from anything closer to Sydney. Treat it as the destination, not a stop along the way to somewhere else.

That guide covers the same road as a route-logistics reference — distances, timings and where the road slows down. This itinerary spreads the same corridor across five days with specific overnight stops and continues on to Jervis Bay, which the Grand Pacific Drive guide only mentions in passing as its endpoint.
