    10 Days in the Whitsundays & Airlie Beach: Island & Reef Itinerary

    This is deliberately not a road-trip itinerary. The Whitsundays are 74 islands and the experience is almost entirely on the water — the plan below leaves real space between activities rather than trying to fill every day with a booking.

    Fly into Whitsunday Coast Airport at Proserpine (about 35 km, 40 minutes to Airlie Beach by transfer) or, if budget allows, Hamilton Island Airport, which sits inside the islands themselves and cuts the boat ride to Whitehaven Beach to about 30 minutes instead of roughly 1.5 hours from Airlie.

    The centrepiece is a multi-day sailing trip. Everything else in this plan is built around having one before or after it, not instead of it — a single overnight trip barely gets you to Whitehaven and back.

    • Multi-day sailing trips vary enormously by vessel and cabin class — budget boats start under $500 per person for two nights; premium yachts run considerably more. Compare what's actually included (meals, snorkel gear, crew) rather than headline price alone.
    • Reef day trips typically run $220–$300 per adult plus the Environmental Management Charge, a small statutory fee applied to every reef tour on top of the ticket price.
    • Hamilton Island Airport cuts the boat time to Whitehaven Beach dramatically but usually costs more to fly into than Whitsunday Coast Airport at Proserpine — worth pricing both before booking.

    Common questions

    No. Airlie Beach itself is walkable, transfers run from the airport, and almost everything worth doing — sailing, reef trips, island ferries — is booked as a boat trip, not a drive. A car only helps if you're also driving the Bruce Highway coast.

    A 2-night/3-day trip is the practical minimum to see Whitehaven Beach and the Hill Inlet lookout without rushing. A single overnight trip is possible but tight — you're often on the water for one full day only.

    Roughly November to May, in line with tropical Queensland generally. Swim inside a stinger net or lagoon during that window, or wear a full-body stinger suit — most reef and sailing operators provide them.
