Wangaratta → Beechworth → Milawa & King Valley (Whitfield) → Mansfield → Mount Buller (side trip) → Benalla → Wangaratta

Victorian High Country Road Trip: the full drive guide

This is a separate High Country loop from our Great Alpine Road guide, with no overlap in the roads themselves — no Bright, no Mount Hotham, no Omeo. Instead it runs through Beechworth's gold-rush heritage, the King Valley's wine and gourmet food region along the Snow Road, and Mount Buller, Victoria's other major alpine resort, reached from Mansfield rather than from the Bright side of the mountains.

    Distance
~235 km for the full Wangaratta loop; add roughly 95 km return if you take the Mount Buller side trip from Mansfield
    Time needed
3 days minimum; 4–5 days lets you properly add the Mount Buller side trip and slow down in the King Valley
    Vehicle
    2WD suitable
    Surface
The core loop and the Mount Buller Alpine Road to the village are sealed. The Whitfield–Mansfield road via Tolmie is a narrower, winding high-country road — allow extra time and check current conditions before travelling, or take the longer route back via Benalla instead.
    Best months
November–April for easy driving and the King Valley's harvest season. June to early October is Mount Buller's snow season specifically — that side trip needs chains and winter planning; the rest of the loop stays a straightforward sealed drive year-round.

Open year-round on the core Wangaratta–Beechworth–King Valley–Mansfield–Benalla loop. The amber months reflect the Mount Buller side trip only, roughly June to early October, when chains are required on the signed alpine sections — the rest of the loop is a straightforward sealed drive regardless of season.

Wildlife warning: do not drive at night

Kangaroos and wombats are active at dawn and dusk throughout this loop, particularly the narrower Whitfield–Mansfield section via Tolmie.

It's also distinct from our 5 Days: Bright, Mount Buffalo & the Victorian High Country itinerary, which is a destination stay based in Bright and doesn't visit Beechworth, the King Valley or Mount Buller at all. Treat that itinerary and this road trip as two different ways into the same broader region rather than one covering the other.

Both Wangaratta and Mansfield are realistic Melbourne gateways — Wangaratta around 2.5 hours via the Hume Freeway, Mansfield around 2 hours via the Maroondah Highway — so this loop works starting from either end, or as a standalone weekend without Melbourne in it at all.

    The stops, in driving order

    1. 01

      Wangaratta

      0 km in · Start

Critical supply point — Full regional services before the loop begins.

The start, with full regional services before the loop heads into the Ovens and King valleys.

Tip: Fill up here — fuel gets less convenient once you're into the smaller King Valley towns.

    2. 02

      Beechworth

      35 km in · 35m

A near-fully-preserved gold-rush-era streetscape, with the historic Beechworth Bakery and the Burke Museum among the reasons people build a whole day around this town alone.

Tip: Park at the edge of the historic precinct and walk it — the main street gets busy with day-trippers from Melbourne on weekends.

    3. 03

      Milawa & King Valley (Whitfield)

      75 km in · 45m

Milawa's cheese, mustard and cellar-door producers give way to the King Valley proper along the Snow Road — Italian-heritage vineyards, prosecco and increasingly the region's alpine-adjacent gourmet food scene.

Tip: Nominate a driver if cellar doors are part of the day — the same drink-driving logic applies here as any wine region.

    4. 04

      Mansfield

      130 km in · 55m, via Tolmie

Critical supply point — Last full services before the Mount Buller side trip.

The gateway town for Mount Buller and Lake Eildon, with a genuinely different, more workaday High Country character to the wine towns further north.

Tip: Last full services before the climb to Mount Buller — fill up here if you're doing the side trip.

    5. 05

      Mount Buller (side trip)

178 km in · 40m each way from Mansfield

Victoria's most accessible alpine resort village from Melbourne, with walking tracks and chairlift-accessed lookouts in summer and skiing in winter — a genuinely different landscape to the rest of this loop.

Tip: This is a return side trip, not a through-route — you come back down to Mansfield before continuing the loop, so budget the round trip rather than treating it as a one-way leg.

    6. 06

      Benalla

      200 km in · 1h from Mansfield

A Midland Highway service town with a well-known rose garden and lake, and the practical last stop before rejoining Wangaratta.

Tip: A sensible fuel and food stop before the short final leg.

    7. 07

      Wangaratta

      235 km in · 25m

Critical supply point — Full regional services before the loop begins.

      The end of the loop.

Tip: Onward from here, both Beechworth and the start of the Great Alpine Road are close by if you're extending the trip further into the High Country.

Drive planning: legs, fuel and conditions

Three paces, same road: highway pace, a towing or 4WD rig, and what the day actually takes once fatigue and photo stops are in it.

How we get these: standard is moving time at signposted highway pace. Rig time assumes a 90–100 km/h cruise and slower acceleration — roughly 20% longer. Realistic pace adds a 15-minute fatigue stop every two hours (the national driver-fatigue guidance) plus about ten minutes an hour for photos, fuel and legs. Plan daylight around the realistic column, not the standard one.

    What can go wrong

    • Mount Buller's alpine road requires chains in the declared snow season, roughly June to early October — this applies only to that side trip, not the rest of the loop.
    • Bushfire risk is genuine across the King Valley, Mansfield and the Buller foothills in summer, roughly December to March — check Parks Victoria and Country Fire Authority alerts before a summer visit.
    • Kangaroos and wombats are active at dawn and dusk on the rural roads throughout this loop, particularly the narrower Whitfield–Mansfield section via Tolmie.
    • The Whitfield–Mansfield road is the least-serviced leg on this loop — fuel up in Whitfield or Mansfield rather than assuming you'll find a stop in between.

Conditions change seasonally and after storms. Check current conditions with the road authority before relying on any of this.

    Common questions

There's no overlap in the roads — this loop doesn't go near Bright, Mount Hotham or Omeo. It covers Beechworth, the King Valley and Mount Buller instead, a genuinely separate part of Victoria's High Country reached from Mansfield rather than the Bright side of the mountains.

Broadly the same High Country, but a different route entirely — that itinerary is a destination stay in Bright built around Mount Buffalo National Park, and doesn't visit Beechworth, the King Valley or Mount Buller. Treat them as two different ways to experience the region rather than one covering the other.

No — the core loop and the Mount Buller Alpine Road are sealed, and a standard 2WD manages the whole route. The Whitfield–Mansfield leg via Tolmie is a narrower, winding high-country road, so allow extra time and check current conditions before travelling; chains are only required on the Buller side trip within the declared snow season.

Yes, with planning — Wangaratta, Beechworth, Mansfield and Benalla are all serviceable charging stops. Mount Buller village has limited, seasonal charging, so treat that side trip as a there-and-back on a full charge rather than an opportunity to top up.
