5 Days: Bright, Mount Buffalo & Victorian High Country Itinerary

This is a Bright-based holiday plan, not a version of our Great Alpine Road route guide — that guide is about driving through the region from Wangaratta to Metung via Mount Hotham; this itinerary is about staying in one place and using Mount Buffalo National Park as the centrepiece. Mount Buffalo sits on its own turnoff near Porepunkah and isn't part of the Great Alpine Road corridor at all.

    Length
    5 days
    Total distance
~180 km local driving from a Bright base
    Season
Warmer months (November–April) are the easiest window for walking and the plateau's lookouts. Autumn (April–May) is genuinely popular — Bright's deciduous plantings turn, and accommodation books out well ahead. Winter (June–September) brings snow to the Mount Buffalo plateau, which is a different, colder trip requiring extra planning; alpine weather is changeable in any season, so pack layers regardless of when you go.
    Vehicle
Any 2WD reaches Bright and the sealed road up to the Mount Buffalo plateau outside the snow season. Within the declared snow season, carrying snow chains for the climb onto the plateau is standard practice for an alpine park road at this elevation — check Parks Victoria's current requirements before a winter visit. This is a destination stay based in Bright, not a through-drive, so day-to-day distances are short.

Base: Bright. Nearby destinations: Mount Buffalo National Park, Beechworth, Milawa.

Bright is the base for all five days — around three hours from Melbourne via the Hume Freeway and the Great Alpine Road, or a shorter run from Wangaratta if you're arriving that way. It's a genuinely walkable alpine-gateway town in its own right, with the Ovens Valley's flat rail trail on its doorstep for an easy first or last afternoon.

The Victorian High Country's weather turns quickly and its bushfire risk is real in summer — check current Parks Victoria alerts and total fire ban days before committing to a walk, and treat any track or road closure notice as current rather than assuming a guidebook description still holds.

    Cost and booking notes

    • Mount Buffalo National Park requires a Parks Victoria vehicle entry fee — a Victorian parks pass is better value if you're visiting more than one park on the same trip.
    • Bright accommodation books out well ahead for the April–May autumn colour season — secure it early if that's your window.
    • Snow chains, if travelling in the declared snow season, are worth hiring in Bright or Mount Beauty on the way in rather than assuming you won't need them.

    Common questions

No — they're different mountains in the same broader High Country region. Mount Hotham is the high point of the Great Alpine Road between Bright and Omeo; Mount Buffalo National Park is a separate plateau reached via its own turnoff near Porepunkah, and isn't part of that through-route at all.

Outside the snow season, no — it's a straightforward sealed drive. Within the declared snow season, carrying chains for the climb onto the plateau is standard practice at this elevation, similar to other Victorian alpine parks — check Parks Victoria's current requirements before a winter visit.

That's a driving-logistics guide for the through-route from Wangaratta to Metung via Mount Hotham. This is a day-by-day holiday plan based in Bright, built around Mount Buffalo, that doesn't need you to drive the Hotham crossing at all.
