Itinerary
7 Days: Adelaide Hills, Barossa & Kangaroo Island Itinerary
This is clearly a different trip from our Flinders Ranges itinerary — same Adelaide Hills and Barossa opening, then Kangaroo Island's wildlife instead of the outback. Don't try to combine both regions into one week; the driving and ferry logistics don't leave room for it.
- Length
- 7 days
- Total distance
- ~400 km driving, plus the Cape Jervis–Penneshaw ferry crossing
- Season
- September–November for wildflowers and seal pups; February–March for the warmest water. Avoid dawn and dusk driving on Kangaroo Island year-round — wildlife strikes are a genuine, common risk.
- Vehicle
- A car is essential on Kangaroo Island — 85% of its roads are unsealed and there's no public transport. Bringing a mainland rental car across on the ferry is often restricted, or has insurance exclusions for the crossing itself and for dusk-to-dawn island driving — check your hire agreement before assuming you can take it. Hiring locally, arranged through the ferry operator to be waiting at Penneshaw or Kingscote, is usually the simpler option and not much more expensive once you account for the vehicle ferry fare you'd otherwise pay.
- Suits
- Couples, Family, Friends Group

Route map
Approximate route: Adelaide → Hahndorf → Tanunda → Kingscote. Shown for planning only — this is not a turn-by-turn route. Always check current road conditions before you travel.

Route stops in order: 1. Adelaide, 2. Hahndorf, 3. Tanunda, 4. Kingscote.
Base yourself in one place on Kangaroo Island rather than moving accommodation each night — most of the island's attractions are day trips from a central base near Kingscote or American River, not overnight stops in themselves.
The vehicle question matters more here than on most trips in this guide. Read the vehicle note below before you book a hire car, not after.
Day by day
| Days | Route | Distance | Drive | What you do | Sleep |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrive Adelaide → Adelaide Hills | ~30 km | 20m | Hahndorf and Mount Lofty, both close to the city. Settle into the Hills or head straight to the Barossa if you'd rather not double back tomorrow. | Adelaide Hills |
| Day 2 | Adelaide Hills → Barossa Valley | ~70 km | 1h | Cellar doors around Tanunda and Nuriootpa. Some of the world's oldest continuously producing shiraz vines are planted here. | Barossa Valley |
| Day 3 | Barossa → Cape Jervis → Kangaroo Island | ~180 km + ferry | 2h drive, 45m ferry | Long transit day. The SeaLink vehicle ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw takes about 45 minutes — book your crossing time well ahead, especially over summer and school holidays. | Kingscote / American River |
| Day 4 | Kangaroo Island | ~120 km return | 2h | Seal Bay Conservation Park — a guided walk onto the beach among a wild Australian sea lion colony — and Vivonne Bay. | Kingscote / American River |
| Day 5 | Kangaroo Island — Flinders Chase National Park | ~180 km return | 3h | Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, at the island's western end. Flinders Chase burned significantly in the 2019–20 bushfires; it has substantially recovered, but check current park openings before you go. | Kingscote / American River |
| Day 6 | Kangaroo Island → Cape Jervis → Barossa or Adelaide | ferry + ~180 km | 45m ferry, 2h drive | Morning ferry back to the mainland. An easy afternoon rather than another full day of driving. | Adelaide |
| Day 7 | Adelaide | — | — | Depart. | — |
Cost and booking notes
- Vehicle ferry fares to Kangaroo Island are expensive relative to the crossing distance — book well ahead for the best price and to guarantee your preferred sailing time.
- Seal Bay's guided beach walk is paid entry and departs at set times — book ahead in peak season rather than turning up.
- Kangaroo Island accommodation is limited relative to demand — secure it before the Adelaide Hills and Barossa legs of this trip, not after.
