7 Days on Kangaroo Island: In-Depth Itinerary
This is a different trip from our 7 Days Adelaide Hills, Barossa & Kangaroo Island itinerary, which gives the island roughly two and a half days as one leg of a broader South Australia trip. This one gives Kangaroo Island the full week and skips the mainland wine regions almost entirely — the right choice if the island itself, not a combined SA trip, is the point of your visit.

- September–November for wildflowers, seal pups and mild weather; February–March for the warmest water. Avoid dawn and dusk driving on Kangaroo Island year-round — wildlife strikes are a genuine, common risk here, more so than almost anywhere else in this guide.
- Vehicle
- A car is essential — Kangaroo Island has no public transport connecting its attractions, and a meaningful share of its roads are unsealed. Mainland rental agreements from Adelaide often restrict or exclude the ferry crossing and dusk-to-dawn island driving; hiring a vehicle locally, arranged through the ferry operator to be waiting at Penneshaw or Kingscote, is usually simpler and not much more once you account for the vehicle ferry fare you'd otherwise pay. An EV isn't a practical choice for the island itself — unsealed roads and no reliable charging network once you're off the ferry rule it out.

The vehicle question matters more here than on most trips in this guide — read the vehicle note above before you book anything, not after. The ferry crossing and the rental-restriction issue catch out more visitors than any single attraction on the island does.
A full week supports two bases rather than one: the island's east (Kingscote, American River or Penneshaw) for the first half, then somewhere near Vivonne Bay or Flinders Chase for the second, so you're not driving two hours each way to reach the western attractions on a day trip.

Cost and booking notes
- Vehicle ferry fares to Kangaroo Island are expensive relative to the crossing distance — book well ahead for the best price and to guarantee your preferred sailing time.
- Seal Bay's guided beach walk is paid entry and departs at set times — book ahead in peak season rather than turning up.
- Fuel on the island is more expensive than the mainland and limited to a handful of towns — fill up in Kingscote or Penneshaw rather than assuming you'll find a servo near Flinders Chase.
- Kangaroo Island accommodation is limited relative to demand for a full week — secure both bases well ahead, especially over summer and school holidays.
