Open year-round on the mainland with no seasonal closure of its own, but the cyclone season, roughly November to April, brings a real chance of storms disrupting reef and island excursions at short notice — the mainland driving itself is rarely affected.
Wildlife warning: do not drive at night
Wildlife is active at dawn and dusk on the rural sections between towns, particularly north of Bundaberg toward Agnes Water.
Live road conditions
The Southern Great Barrier Reef is reached from this coast by boat — Lady Musgrave and Lady Elliot Islands are the main destinations, both known for clearer water and healthier coral than sections of the reef further north affected by bleaching. This guide treats reef access as an optional excursion added to the mainland drive, not a self-drive destination, and doesn't hard-code operator schedules, which change.
Agnes Water and Town of 1770 are the northernmost, most remote-feeling stop on this route — genuinely quieter than Bundaberg and Bargara, and a natural place to break a longer Queensland coastal trip before continuing on toward Gladstone and the Capricorn Coast.
The stops, in driving order
- 01
Bundaberg
0 km in · StartCritical supply point — Full regional services before heading up the coast.
The regional hub, with full services and the Bundaberg Rum Distillery as a well-known local landmark.
Tip: Fill up and stock up here — services thin out noticeably heading toward Agnes Water.
- 02
Bargara
15 km in · 15mThe coastal town closest to Bundaberg, with The Basin — a naturally sheltered swimming spot formed by an old lava flow — and the Mon Repos Turtle Centre nearby.
Tip: A sensible base for the whole route if you'd rather stay coastal than in Bundaberg itself.
- 03
Elliott Heads
35 km in · 30mA quieter river-mouth town where the Elliott River meets the sea, with a much lower-key feel than Bargara.
Tip: A good half-hour stop rather than a full day — Bargara and Agnes Water are the bigger drawcards on this route.
- 04
Agnes Water
155 km in · 1h 30m, back via Bundaberg and north on the Bruce HighwayCritical supply point — Last full services before Town of 1770.
The southernmost point on the East Coast where you can surf, with a genuine surf beach and a growing, still low-key holiday-town feel.
Tip: Book reef or island excursions ahead — this is the main departure point for Lady Musgrave Island day trips.
- 05
Town of 1770
161 km in · 10mNamed for Captain Cook's 1770 landing, the second place he set foot in Queensland after Botany Bay, with a genuinely different, older-feeling character to Agnes Water next door.
Tip: The end of this route. Onward from here, the Bruce Highway and our Capricorn Coast guide continue north toward Gladstone and Rockhampton.
Drive planning: legs, fuel and conditions
Three paces, same road: highway pace, a towing or 4WD rig, and what the day actually takes once fatigue and photo stops are in it.

How we get these: standard is moving time at signposted highway pace. Rig time assumes a 90–100 km/h cruise and slower acceleration — roughly 20% longer. Realistic pace adds a 15-minute fatigue stop every two hours (the national driver-fatigue guidance) plus about ten minutes an hour for photos, fuel and legs. Plan daylight around the realistic column, not the standard one.

What can go wrong
- The cyclone season, roughly November to April, brings a real chance of storms disrupting reef and island excursions at short notice — build slack into any island day-trip plans in that window.
- Summer heat and humidity are genuine on this coast, regularly into the 30s with high humidity from November to March.
- Wildlife is active at dawn and dusk on the rural sections between towns, particularly north of Bundaberg toward Agnes Water.
- Ocean conditions and stinger risk vary seasonally on this coast — check current advice before swimming, particularly in the warmer months.
Conditions change seasonally and after storms. Check current conditions with the road authority before relying on any of this.
