Open year-round on the mainland with no seasonal closure of its own, but the cyclone season, roughly November to April, brings a real chance of storms disrupting K'gari barge crossings and tours at short notice — the mainland driving itself is rarely affected.

Wildlife is active at dawn and dusk on the rural sections between Gympie, Rainbow Beach and Maryborough.
Live road conditions
K'gari itself needs to be planned on completely different terms to anything else in this guide. The only public road on the island is sand, and a standard 2WD hire car cannot handle it — most rental agreements exclude the island outright. Most visitors, and especially international ones without local 4WD and beach-driving experience, are better served by an organised tour from Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay than by taking their own vehicle across; a Vehicle Access Permit from Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is required either way. This guide doesn't cover on-island driving instructions — treat the island as a specialist add-on to the mainland route, not an extension of it.
Hervey Bay is one of the best-known humpback whale watching bases in Australia, roughly July to November, when whales rest in its sheltered waters on their migration — check current tour operators and season dates rather than assuming a fixed window every year.

Tip: Worth an hour or two on foot in the historic riverside precinct even if you're pushing on to Hervey Bay the same day.

How we get these: standard is moving time at signposted highway pace. Rig time assumes a 90–100 km/h cruise and slower acceleration — roughly 20% longer. Realistic pace adds a 15-minute fatigue stop every two hours (the national driver-fatigue guidance) plus about ten minutes an hour for photos, fuel and legs. Plan daylight around the realistic column, not the standard one.

What can go wrong
- A standard 2WD cannot drive on K'gari — the only public road on the island is sand. Don't assume your mainland hire car covers it; check your rental agreement specifically.
- Cyclone season, roughly November to April, brings a real chance of storms disrupting K'gari barge crossings and tours at short notice — build slack into your schedule if travelling in that window.
- Wildlife is active at dawn and dusk on the rural sections between Gympie, Rainbow Beach and Maryborough.
- Barge queues at both Inskip Point and River Heads can run to an hour or more in peak periods and school holidays — factor that into same-day K'gari plans.
