    May–October for the most comfortable weather. The cyclone season, roughly November–April, brings real heat, humidity and a chance of reef-tour disruption at short notice — the mainland stays open. Turtle nesting runs roughly November to March, with hatchlings emerging January to March; neither sightings nor exact dates are ever guaranteed.

    Any 2WD covers this entire itinerary on sealed roads. A car is genuinely useful for moving between Bundaberg, Bargara and Mon Repos; reef excursions are boat-based, not something you drive to.

    Base yourself in Bargara, the coastal town closest to the beaches and Mon Repos, rather than inland Bundaberg itself — it's a short drive from the CBD but puts you on the water for the rest of the week.

    The Southern Great Barrier Reef here is genuinely reachable — Lady Musgrave and Lady Elliot Islands are both accessible by boat or light plane from the region — but this is a reef excursion added to a mainland base, not a self-drive destination. Book any island or reef trip through a current operator rather than assuming a fixed schedule.
