    7 Days: Sunshine Coast & K'gari Itinerary

    This plan has two distinct halves: a conventional Sunshine Coast base (Noosa works well) reached and explored the ordinary way, and a K'gari component that needs planning on its own terms, because the island runs on sand roads, tides and a vehicle permit system rather than a regular highway.

K'gari itself is different: the only public road on the island is sand, and it requires a genuine high-clearance 4WD — either your own vehicle taken across on the barge with a permit, or, the simpler choice for most visitors and especially international ones, an organised tour that supplies both vehicle and driver.

    For the K'gari component, most visitors are better served by a mainland-based organised tour than by self-driving. A day or multi-day tour from Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay handles the Vehicle Access Permit, the barge booking and the soft-sand driving itself — genuinely difficult if you haven't done it before — and it's the practical choice for international visitors without local 4WD experience or their own high-clearance vehicle. Confident, well-equipped 4WD travellers can take their own vehicle across instead; both options are covered below.

    Base on the Sunshine Coast for the mainland days — Noosa is the easiest single base, with Mooloolaba and the hinterland both within an easy day trip. Treat K'gari as a self-contained three-to-four day block within the week rather than a rushed side trip; it does not work as a same-day return from the Sunshine Coast.

    Day 4K'gari — Central Station & Lake McKenzieon-island, tour or self-drive—Cross by barge — Inskip Point to Hook Point is the short crossing, roughly 15–30 minutes; River Heads to Wanggoolba Creek the longer one, around 40 minutes. Central Station's rainforest boardwalks and Lake McKenzie's white silica sand and clear water are the standard first day on the island.     Day 5K'gari — 75 Mile Beach & Indian Headon-island—75 Mile Beach is itself a gazetted road, and driving it means working around the tide — vehicles keep off it for roughly two hours either side of high tide, when the compacted sand disappears. The Maheno shipwreck, Champagne Pools and Indian Head are all reached along it. Dingoes are a genuine wild population here, not a photo prop — keep well back, don't feed them, and secure all food. Do not swim in the ocean: strong currents, undertows and sharks make the open coast unsafe, unlike the island's freshwater lakes.On K'gari or back at your mainland base

    Cost and booking notes

    • A Vehicle Access Permit from Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is required for every vehicle on K'gari, priced by length of stay — check current fees on the QPWS booking site before you travel, since they're reviewed periodically.
    • Organised K'gari tours cost more than a self-drive day but include the permit, barge and an experienced driver — for anyone without their own well-equipped 4WD and beach-driving experience, that's not a luxury upgrade, it's the realistic way to do the island safely.
    • Barge fares vary by crossing and by whether you're bringing a trailer — check current pricing directly, and in school holiday periods book both the barge and any accommodation well ahead.

    Common questions

    Yes for any self-drive — the only public road on the island is sand, and a standard 2WD hire car cannot handle it; most rental agreements exclude K'gari outright for that reason. A high-clearance 4WD, correct tyre pressures and a Vehicle Access Permit are all required if you're taking your own vehicle across.

    For most first-time visitors, an organised tour from Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay is the more practical choice — it removes the permit paperwork, the barge booking and, most importantly, the soft-sand and tide-timed driving itself, which catches out experienced drivers, not just inexperienced ones. Self-driving is realistic once you already have genuine 4WD and beach-driving experience.

    Not in the ocean — 75 Mile Beach and the rest of the open coast carry strong currents, undertows and sharks, and swimming there isn't recommended. The island's freshwater perched lakes, especially Lake McKenzie, are the safe and genuinely spectacular alternative.
