Open year-round with no seasonal closure of its own, but the Northern Rivers wet season, roughly December to March, brings the region's heaviest rain and a real flood risk on low-lying roads — Lismore in particular has flooded significantly in recent years. April to November is generally more reliable.
Wildlife warning: do not drive at night
Wildlife is active at dawn and dusk on the rural roads between towns — this is genuine countryside, not a suburban drive.
Live road conditions
This complements rather than duplicates our 10 Days on the East Coast itinerary and Legendary Pacific Coast route guide, both of which cover the coastal run through Byron Bay itself. This guide is the inland detour — the contrast between Byron's beach culture and the greener, slower hinterland just behind it.
Nimbin is famous, but it's not the reason to do this drive — Bangalow's genuine country-town character and the Minyon Falls lookout are worth the trip on their own. Treat Nimbin as an interesting stop along the way, not the destination the whole route is built around.

Tip: Park on the edge of town and walk in — the main street gets busy, especially on market Saturdays.

Minyon Falls (Nightcap National Park)
40 km in · 35mA 100 m waterfall with a lookout a short walk from the car park, and longer rainforest walking tracks for those who want more.
Tip: The access road narrows and can be affected by heavy rain — check current conditions if you're visiting after a storm.

Nimbin
60 km in · 30mA famous 1970s counter-culture town, still genuinely distinctive rather than a manufactured tourist stop.
Tip: It's a small town best seen on foot once you've parked — the main street is the whole experience.

The region's inland hub, with full services — a sensible end point for this loop before returning to the coast.

How we get these: standard is moving time at signposted highway pace. Rig time assumes a 90–100 km/h cruise and slower acceleration — roughly 20% longer. Realistic pace adds a 15-minute fatigue stop every two hours (the national driver-fatigue guidance) plus about ten minutes an hour for photos, fuel and legs. Plan daylight around the realistic column, not the standard one.
