    5 Days in Port Douglas & the Daintree Itinerary

    This bases you in Port Douglas for four nights and only changes accommodation twice — arrival and departure through Cairns — rather than moving hotels for each day trip.

    May–October (dry season) for the most reliable weather and to mostly avoid marine stinger season. The wet season (roughly November–April) brings heavy rain, and the Bloomfield Track further north can close entirely.

    Any 2WD. Sealed road the whole way to Cape Tribulation, including the Daintree River ferry crossing. Only the Bloomfield Track north of Cape Tribulation toward Cooktown needs a 4WD, and it's dry-season only.

    Everything in this plan is sealed-road, 2WD-friendly, including the Daintree River crossing itself, which is a vehicle ferry rather than a bridge.

    Estuarine crocodiles are present in the Daintree River and coastal creeks throughout this region. Swim only in the signed freshwater holes inland, never in the river, tidal creeks or beach shallows near river mouths.

    Cost and booking notes

    • The Daintree River ferry charges a per-vehicle fee each crossing — budget for it both ways if you're day-tripping from Port Douglas rather than staying north of the river.
    • Reef day trips carry the Environmental Management Charge on top of the ticket price, applied to every Great Barrier Reef tour.
    • Port Douglas accommodation is noticeably pricier than Cairns for a comparable standard — the trade-off is proximity to the Daintree and a quieter base.

    No. The road is sealed all the way to Cape Tribulation, including the Daintree River ferry crossing. A 4WD is only needed if you continue further north on the Bloomfield Track toward Cooktown, which is dry-season only.

    The crossing itself is only a few minutes, but the queue can run well over 30 minutes between 9am and 11am. Cross earlier in the morning or later in the day to avoid the wait.
