Itinerary
5 Days: Sunshine Coast First-Time Itinerary
This itinerary deliberately does not include K'gari — our 7 Days: Sunshine Coast & K'gari itinerary is the one to use if the island is part of the plan. This plan instead gives the Sunshine Coast mainland the full five days it deserves on its own: Mooloolaba and Maroochydore's beaches, which that itinerary doesn't reach at all, then Noosa, then a proper hinterland day rather than the half-day it gets elsewhere.
- Length
- 5 days
- Total distance
- ~180 km local driving
- Season
- Year-round. September–November and April–May are the most comfortable; December–February is hot, humid and prone to fast-building afternoon storms, and also the busiest with school holidays.
- Vehicle
- A car is genuinely useful — Mooloolaba, Maroochydore and Noosa are spread along the coast, and the hinterland has no public transport at all. Any 2WD covers this entire itinerary; the hinterland's Blackall Range roads are sealed but narrow and constantly turning.
- Suits
- Family, Couples, First-Time
- Route style
- Point-to-point

Route map
Approximate route: Mooloolaba → Noosa. Shown for planning only — this is not a turn-by-turn route. Always check current road conditions before you travel.

Route stops in order: 1. Mooloolaba, 2. Noosa.
Sunshine Coast Airport, at Marcoola, has direct flights from several Australian cities and puts you closer to Mooloolaba and Maroochydore than Brisbane Airport does — a genuine alternative if this trip doesn't include Brisbane at all.
Base in Mooloolaba or Maroochydore for the first half of the week, then relocate to Noosa for the second half — both are compact, walkable beach towns, and splitting the week this way avoids a long daily commute to either end of the coast.
Day by day
| Days | Route | Distance | Drive | What you do | Sleep |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrive Mooloolaba | — | — | Settle in. Mooloolaba Beach and the Esplanade's café strip are an easy first afternoon, both fully walkable from most accommodation in the area. | Mooloolaba |
| Day 2 | Mooloolaba & Maroochydore | ~8 km | 10m | The Mooloolaba Foreshore boardwalk south to Alexandra Headland is an easy, flat coastal walk, or SEA LIFE Mooloolaba if the weather turns. Maroochydore's own beach and the Cotton Tree picnic grounds, where the Maroochy River meets the sea, are a short drive or a longer walk north. | Mooloolaba |
| Day 3 | Mooloolaba → Noosa | ~25 km | 30m | An easy travel day. Settle into Noosa, then Noosa Main Beach for the afternoon — sheltered and calm, unusual for an east-facing beach. | Noosa |
| Day 4 | Sunshine Coast Hinterland | ~90 km return | 1h 45m with stops | Maleny and Montville, on the Blackall Range, are the standard hinterland day — Montville's galleries and Devonshire teas, Maleny's food scene and the Maleny Botanic Gardens' views over the Glass House Mountains. Our dedicated Sunshine Coast Hinterland road trip covers the full drive if you want to go further, to Mapleton and beyond. | Noosa |
| Day 5 | Noosa National Park, then depart | local | — | The Noosa National Park Coastal Track, about 4.6 km one way and flat, with koalas occasionally spotted in the trees, before departing from Sunshine Coast Airport or driving to Brisbane (~140 km, 1h 45m) for a wider range of flights. | — |
Cost and booking notes
- SEA LIFE Mooloolaba is a paid attraction and the practical wet-weather fallback for Day 2 — check current pricing and combo-ticket options before you go.
- Sunshine Coast accommodation, in both Mooloolaba/Maroochydore and Noosa, books out hard over Queensland school holidays — reserve well ahead, especially over the December–January peak.
- Noosa National Park has no entry fee, and the Coastal Track is free — a useful low-cost day to balance against a paid attraction earlier in the week.
