Longreach has a regional airport with direct flights from Brisbane, and flying in is a genuinely sensible choice, not a compromise — Brisbane to Longreach is around 1,200 km by road, and driving it both ways eats most of a week on its own.

- Any 2WD reaches Longreach, Winton and the Australian Age of Dinosaurs on sealed roads. Lark Quarry Conservation Park, about 110 km south-west of Winton, is reachable by conventional vehicle, but the road is rough and partly unsealed — 4WD is recommended, especially after rain.

This is outback heritage country: the Qantas story starts here, and the region holds one of the world's most significant collections of Australian dinosaur fossils. Base yourself in Longreach and day-trip to Winton, rather than changing accommodation for a town only 180 km away.
The distances between attractions here are real even once you've arrived — this is not a compact regional loop, and remote-driving basics (fuel, water, sun protection) apply even on the sealed sections.

- Flying into Longreach and hiring a car locally sidesteps the 1,200 km road transit from Brisbane entirely — compare the flight-plus-local-hire cost against fuel, time and accommodation for the drive before assuming driving is cheaper.
- Outback town accommodation is limited relative to demand in peak dry-season months — book Longreach and Winton well ahead rather than expecting to find a room on arrival.
- Museum and heritage attraction entry in this region is generally paid — check current prices directly rather than relying on an old figure.
