    Margaret River & South West Loop: the full drive guide

    This is a Perth-based loop through the wine coast and southern forests, not a one-way transit to Albany — our Perth to Esperance: South Coast Route guide already covers Margaret River, Pemberton and the drive on to Albany and Esperance in full, and we don't want to republish that same ground here.     Open year-round with no seasonal closure — this is a fully sealed loop. December to February carries genuine bushfire risk through the forested southern sections, and is also the busiest and most expensive time to find accommodation in Margaret River itself.

    Wildlife warning: do not drive at night

    Wildlife is active at dawn and dusk on the forested sections between Augusta and Pemberton — kangaroos and the occasional larger animal are a real hazard at those times.

    The Bussell Highway is the direct route from Bunbury to Margaret River and on to Augusta, about 140 km end to end. Caves Road, running closer to the coast between Busselton and Margaret River, is the slower, more scenic alternative — either works, and this guide covers both.

    The loop's character changes properly as you go: Margaret River's wine and surf coast, then Augusta at the mainland's south-western tip where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet, then inland to Pemberton's tall karri forest before the run back to Perth.

      Tip: Caves Road, the scenic alternative to the Bussell Highway from here to Margaret River, adds time but is worth it if you're not in a hurry.

      Tip: The Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is open for tours — check current times before you plan your visit around it.

    How we get these: standard is moving time at signposted highway pace. Rig time assumes a 90–100 km/h cruise and slower acceleration — roughly 20% longer. Realistic pace adds a 15-minute fatigue stop every two hours (the national driver-fatigue guidance) plus about ten minutes an hour for photos, fuel and legs. Plan daylight around the realistic column, not the standard one.

    What can go wrong

    • Wildlife is active at dawn and dusk on the forested sections between Augusta and Pemberton — kangaroos and the occasional larger animal are a real hazard at those times.
    • The coast around Augusta and Cape Leeuwin is exposed to the Southern Ocean and can turn rough with little warning — stay behind barriers at coastal lookouts.
    • Summer carries genuine bushfire risk through the forested southern sections — check current conditions and total fire ban status if travelling December to March.
    • Fuel is more limited in Augusta and Pemberton than in the larger towns — top up in Margaret River or Bunbury where you can.

    That guide is a one-way transit from Perth to Esperance via Margaret River, Pemberton and Albany, aimed at travellers continuing all the way along the south coast. This is a shorter Perth-based loop that turns back after Pemberton rather than continuing to Albany, for travellers who just want the wine-and-forest South West without the longer commitment.

    No — every road on this route is sealed, including the full loop back to Perth. This is genuinely 2WD-friendly touring.

    The Bussell Highway is faster and more direct. Caves Road, closer to the coast, is slower but more scenic — a genuine trade-off rather than one being objectively better, so pick based on how much time you have.

    With reasonable planning, yes — Perth, Bunbury, Busselton and Margaret River are all realistic charging stops. Augusta and Pemberton are smaller towns, so confirm current charger status for those two specifically before relying on them.
