    5 Days: Perth & Rottnest Island Itinerary

    This is the condensed version of our 7 Days: Perth & Rottnest Island itinerary, built for a short break rather than a full week — a first Perth visit, a couple's long weekend, or a few days bolted onto either end of a WA road trip. The core difference is Rottnest: this plan treats it as a single, full day trip rather than an overnight stay, which is what makes the whole thing fit into five days without feeling rushed.

    Season
    Year-round, but summer (December–February) is hot, dry and the most reliable for swimming, and also the most crowded and expensive on Rottnest. Winter (June–August) brings Perth's wettest months. September–November and March–April are the most comfortable shoulder windows, with lighter crowds on the island.
    Vehicle
    A car is genuinely optional and, for this itinerary, unnecessary — private vehicles aren't permitted for general visitors on Rottnest Island, where cycling or the Island Explorer bus are the way around, and Transperth's train and bus network (including a direct Airport Line into the city) covers Perth and Fremantle well. Only add a hire car if you extend beyond this plan toward the South West or the south coast.

    Base yourself in central Perth. The Airport Line train runs directly from Perth Airport to Perth Station in around 15–20 minutes — one of the more genuinely convenient capital-city airport connections in the country — and the free CAT bus loops cover the compact CBD on foot-friendly terms. Nothing in this plan requires a hire car.

    Perth and Rottnest both carry real sun and heat exposure, especially November to March — reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and water are not optional extras here, and rip currents are a genuine risk on the open ocean beaches, so swim at patrolled beaches between the flags where you can.

    Cost and booking notes

    • Rottnest ferry fares vary by departure point — Fremantle is typically the shorter and cheaper crossing, Perth the longer, scenic-river option. Compare both before booking, and book the ferry ahead in summer and WA school holidays.
    • Bike hire on Rottnest can be booked with your ferry ticket or arranged on arrival; an e-bike costs more but covers the island's hillier sections with far less effort in a single day.
    • Perth accommodation is generally easier to secure at short notice than Rottnest's own limited beds — this plan avoids that pressure entirely by day-tripping the island rather than booking a stay there.

    Common questions

    No — the Airport Line train, Transperth's network and Perth's compact, walkable CBD cover this entire itinerary, including Fremantle. Only pick up a hire car if you're extending the trip beyond Perth and Rottnest.

    It's enough to see The Basin, Pinky Beach and the main settlement comfortably by bike, which is what this itinerary is built around. If you want to also reach the quieter western end and its snorkelling spots without racing the last ferry, our 7-day itinerary builds in a Rottnest overnight instead.

    That version adds a Rottnest overnight and a Swan Valley or second beach day, making it a fuller week. This is the short-break version for travellers with five days or less, or for first-timers adding Perth onto a WA road trip without spending a full week in the city.
