5 Days in Perth & Rottnest Island: A Short Break with an Island Day Trip
A short, car-free break for couples, long-weekenders and anyone adding a few days to either end of a WA road trip. Rottnest is one full day trip rather than an overnight, which is what lets the whole trip fit into five days without feeling rushed.

- Year-round. Summer (December–February) is best for swimming but also the busiest and priciest time on Rottnest; June–August brings Perth's wettest weather. September–November and March–April offer comfortable temperatures and lighter crowds on the island.

- None needed. The Airport Line, the Fremantle line (which stops at Cottesloe), Transperth river ferries and the Rottnest ferries cover everything in this plan, and visitors can't take private cars onto Rottnest. Only hire a car at the end if you're continuing south toward Margaret River or the south coast.

Stay near Perth Station or Elizabeth Quay. The Airport Line gets you there in 15–20 minutes, the Fremantle line runs via Cottesloe Beach, and Transperth ferries cross the river to South Perth from the Elizabeth Quay jetty — everything in this plan is a train or ferry ride away.
Perth's sun is strong, especially from November to March, so pack a hat and sunscreen and carry water. Rip currents are a real risk on the open ocean beaches — swim at patrolled beaches, between the flags.

Cost and booking notes
- Ferry fares differ by departure point. Fremantle is the shorter, usually cheaper crossing; Perth is the scenic river trip. Book ahead in summer and WA school holidays, when early day-trip sailings fill up.
- Add bike hire when you book your ferry to save queuing on arrival. On a single day, an e-bike covers more of the island for less effort.
- Day-tripping Rottnest means you only need Perth accommodation, which is generally easier to book at short notice than the island's limited beds.

No. Trains, the Transperth river ferry and the Rottnest ferries cover this entire plan. Only pick up a hire car if you're continuing beyond Perth.
Yes, for the settlement end — The Basin, Pinky Beach and Thomson Bay are all an easy ride from the ferry, which is what this itinerary is built around. If you want to reach the West End and its seal lookout without rushing, our 7-day itinerary includes a Rottnest overnight instead.
The 7-day plan is a slower week: a Rottnest overnight to reach the far end of the island, a full day at Fremantle Prison, and a day out to Hillarys or the Swan Valley. This one is a car-free short break with Rottnest as a day trip, adding Cottesloe and a river-ferry day in South Perth — better for couples or as a stopover before or after a WA road trip.
