Perth → Margaret River → Albany → Esperance

Perth to Esperance: The South Coast Route: the full drive guide

This route runs the length of Western Australia's south coast, crossing three separate Tourism WA regions in the process — the South West (Margaret River and the southern forests), the Great Southern (Albany), and the western edge of the Golden Outback (Esperance). We've titled it plainly rather than calling it the 'Great Southern Touring Route', since that name officially refers only to the Albany-area region, not the full Perth-to-Esperance journey.

    Distance
    ~1,160 km one way
    Time needed
5 days minimum one way; 7–10 days properly covers Margaret River wine time and the southern forests
    Vehicle
    2WD suitable
    Surface
    Fully sealed the entire way
    Best months
September–November for wildflowers and mild weather, or February–April for settled late-summer conditions. Winter (June–August) is wetter, and the south coast gets genuinely cold, windy weather off the Southern Ocean.

    • High risk / cut

Open year-round — this is a fully sealed route with no wet-season gate. January and February carry bushfire risk through the forested southern sections; June to August brings cold, wet, windy conditions off the Southern Ocean that make the coastal stretches less pleasant, though the road itself stays open.

Wildlife warning: do not drive at night

Wildlife is active at dawn and dusk on the rural sections, particularly through the forested Pemberton–Walpole stretch.

    Live road conditions

The landscape changes markedly along the way: Margaret River's wine country and coast, then the tall karri and jarrah forests around Pemberton and Walpole, then Albany's historic whaling and Anzac heritage, then the long run east to Esperance's turquoise water and the Recherche Archipelago.

Returning to Perth by road roughly doubles the trip. Esperance has a regional airport with flights back to Perth — flying one leg and hiring or relocating a vehicle is a genuine alternative to the full return drive, similar to the one-way logic on our Ningaloo & Coral Coast itinerary.

    The stops, in driving order

      Perth

Critical supply point — Full services before heading south.

The start, with full services before heading south.

Tip: Collect the hire car here — one-way drop-off in Esperance, if you choose to fly back, needs to be arranged in advance.

    2. 02

      Margaret River

      280 km in · 3h

WA's best-known wine region, with sea caves, surf breaks and karri forest all close by. See our dedicated 5 Days in Margaret River & the South West itinerary for this section in depth.

Tip: If wine and the coast are your priority, this is worth two or three nights on its own before continuing.

    3. 03

      Pemberton & the Southern Forests

340 km in · approximately 1h (position along the Margaret River–Albany leg is approximate)

Towering karri forest, including the Gloucester Tree — a former fire-lookout tree that can still be climbed — roughly on the route between Margaret River and Albany.

Tip: A worthwhile stretch-the-legs stop on what is otherwise a long driving day.

    4. 04

      Albany

680 km in · 5h from Margaret River via Pemberton

Critical supply point — Last major town before the long Esperance leg — fill up here.

A historic whaling port and the National Anzac Centre, marking where the first Anzac convoy departed Australia in 1914. The Gap and Natural Bridge, dramatic granite coastal formations, are just outside town.

Tip: Torndirrup National Park's coastal formations are exposed to the Southern Ocean — stay behind the barriers, conditions can be rougher than they look.

    5. 05

      Esperance

      1160 km in · approximately 5h 30m

The end of the route — turquoise water, white sand and Cape Le Grand National Park, looking out over the Recherche Archipelago.

Tip: Esperance has a regional airport with flights to Perth if you'd rather not drive the whole way back.

Drive planning: legs, fuel and conditions

Three paces, same road: highway pace, a towing or 4WD rig, and what the day actually takes once fatigue and photo stops are in it.

How we get these: standard is moving time at signposted highway pace. Rig time assumes a 90–100 km/h cruise and slower acceleration — roughly 20% longer. Realistic pace adds a 15-minute fatigue stop every two hours (the national driver-fatigue guidance) plus about ten minutes an hour for photos, fuel and legs. Plan daylight around the realistic column, not the standard one.

    What can go wrong

    • The Albany–Esperance leg is a genuine long-distance stretch with limited towns in between — fill up in Albany and treat Jerramungup and Ravensthorpe as planned fuel stops, not optional extras.
    • The Southern Ocean coast around Albany and Esperance is exposed and can turn rough with little warning — stay behind barriers at coastal lookouts and check swell conditions before any beach or rock activity.
    • Wildlife is active at dawn and dusk on the rural sections, particularly through the forested Pemberton–Walpole stretch.
    • Winter brings genuinely cold, wet, windy conditions to the south coast — pack for it if travelling June to August.

Conditions change seasonally and after storms. Check current conditions with the road authority before relying on any of this.

    Common questions

No — Great Southern is Tourism WA's official name for the Albany area specifically. This route also crosses the South West region (Margaret River) and the western Golden Outback (Esperance), so we've titled it plainly by its endpoints rather than borrowing a regional name that only covers part of it.

Roughly, yes — it's about 1,160 km one way, so a return drive adds another day or two of driving on top. Esperance's regional airport, with flights back to Perth, is a practical way to avoid that if you'd rather spend the extra time at your destinations.

The 5-day Margaret River itinerary covers that region alone in depth and returns to Perth. The 3-week WA itinerary heads north from Perth to the Coral Coast instead of south. This road trip is the dedicated south-coast route all the way to Esperance, which neither of those covers.
