5 Days: Albany, Denmark & the Great Southern Itinerary

This is a destination stay based in Albany, not a leg of the drive down from Perth — it's built for travellers who've already reached the Great Southern, whether by flying into Albany Airport or driving down via our Perth to Esperance: South Coast Route guide, and now want a proper base to explore from rather than pushing straight on to Esperance.

    Length
    5 days
    Total distance
~380 km local driving from an Albany base
    Season
September–November for wildflowers and mild conditions, or February–April for settled late-summer weather. Winter (June–August) brings genuinely cold, wet, windy weather off the Southern Ocean — beautiful in a stormy-seas way, but pack for it. Wind is a near-constant factor on this coast in any season, not an occasional inconvenience.
    Vehicle
A car is essential — this is a destination region with no meaningful public transport between towns. Every site in this plan is reachable in a standard 2WD on sealed roads.
    Suits

Base: Albany. Nearby destinations: Torndirrup National Park, Denmark, Walpole, Porongurup National Park.

Albany is the base for all five days. Denmark, Walpole and the Porongurup Range are all comfortable day trips from there, each under an hour and a half away — no need to change accommodation through the week.

This coast is exposed to the Southern Ocean, and the wind and swell here are a genuine, near-constant planning factor. Stay behind barriers at coastal lookouts, don't treat calm water as a given, and hold walking plans loosely enough to swap days if a front comes through.

    DaysRouteDistanceDriveWhat you doSleep
Day 1Arrive AlbanySettle in. The Historic Whaling Station and Albany's waterfront give an easy first afternoon, with the National Anzac Centre — marking where the first Anzac convoy departed Australia in 1914 — a strong indoor option if the weather turns.Albany
Day 2Torndirrup National Park~25 km each way25m each wayThe Gap and Natural Bridge, dramatic granite formations dropping straight into the Southern Ocean, are the standout — both viewed from safe, barriered platforms rather than a walk. Stony Hill's short loop track adds an easy walk if you want one.Albany
Day 3Denmark & William Bay National Park~55 km each way45m each wayGreens Pool and Elephant Rocks in William Bay National Park are the region's best swimming, sheltered by granite boulders from the open ocean swell when conditions allow — check conditions before swimming regardless. Denmark township itself is an easy, walkable lunch stop.Albany
Day 4Walpole & the Valley of the Giants~120 km each way1h 30m each wayThe Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk, a 600 m steel walkway through the karri and tingle forest canopy, is wheelchair and pram accessible — the easier option. The Ancient Empire ground-level loop beneath the same giant tingle trees is the lower-effort alternative if heights aren't for you.Albany
Day 5Porongurup National Park, then depart~40 km each way40m each wayThe Granite Skywalk atop Castle Rock is a genuine scramble with a ladder and cage section near the top — allow 2–3 hours return and skip it if that's not your thing. The Tree in the Rock and shorter forest walks nearby cover the park's character without the climb.

    Cost and booking notes

    • The National Anzac Centre and Historic Whaling Station both charge entry — check current pricing before you go.
    • William Bay and Porongurup National Parks require a WA Parks entry pass, either a day pass or a holiday pass if you're visiting more than one WA national park on the trip.
    • Albany accommodation is generally easier to secure than Perth or Margaret River, but still books out over WA school holidays — reserve ahead regardless.

    Common questions

No — that guide is a driving-logistics route covering the full 1,160 km from Perth to Esperance, with Albany as one of five stops along the way. This is a destination stay based in Albany for the region itself, with far more depth on Denmark, Walpole and Porongurup than a through-route can give.

No — every site in this itinerary, including the Valley of the Giants and Porongurup, is reached by sealed road and a standard 2WD.

Conditions vary a lot with wind and swell. Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks in William Bay National Park are the most sheltered options, but check conditions before swimming anywhere on this coast — the Southern Ocean can turn rough with little warning, and Torndirrup's formations are for viewing from barriers, not swimming.
