    Open year-round with no seasonal closure — this is a fully sealed hinterland drive. December to March brings the region's heaviest rain and a real chance of a fast-building afternoon thunderstorm on the range's narrow, shoulderless roads.

    Wildlife, particularly possums and the occasional wallaby, is active at dusk on the bushland sections between villages.

    The Glass House Mountains — a cluster of steep volcanic plugs visible for miles across the coastal plain — are the gateway from Brisbane via Steve Irwin Way through Landsborough. From there the road climbs onto the Blackall Range escarpment, and the character of the drive changes completely: village main streets, rainforest pockets and lookouts over the coast, all on a road that rarely lets you go faster than about 60 km/h.

    Maleny, Montville and Mapleton each have a genuinely different feel — Maleny the working dairy-country town turned foodie stop, Montville the tourist-facing village of galleries and Devonshire teas, Mapleton the quieter, less crowded of the three with the best access to walking tracks. Balance village browsing against at least one proper walk; it's easy to spend a whole day moving between cafes and never reach a lookout on foot.

      Critical supply point — Fuel and provisions before the narrower Montville and Mapleton sections.

      A former dairy-farming town on the edge of the range, now known for its food scene and the Maleny Botanic Gardens' views over the Glass House Mountains.

      Tip: Gardners Falls, just out of town, is a short walk to a swimming hole popular with locals rather than tour groups.

      Montville

      The most visited of the three villages — galleries, Devonshire teas and a Bavarian-influenced main street, with sweeping escarpment views from the Gerrard Lookout just out of town.

      Tip: Parking on the main street fills fast on weekends — the public car park just off the strip is the easier option.

      Quieter than Montville, and the base for Mapleton National Park's Kondalilla Falls — a genuine rainforest walk with a swimming hole, not just a lookout.

      Tip: The Kondalilla Falls circuit is about 2.7 km, roughly an hour, and the more rewarding walk on this route than any of the drive-up lookouts.

      Critical supply point — Full services return here at the end of the range road.

      The end of the range road, back down at coastal level, with full services and the connection back to the Sunshine Coast or Brisbane.

      Tip: Fuel and provisions are noticeably cheaper here than in the hinterland villages — top up before heading back into the range if you're continuing on.

    • Summer storms build quickly over the range in the afternoon, roughly December to March — heavy rain on the Maleny-Montville-Mapleton sections reduces visibility fast on a road with no shoulder to pull into.
    • The range road is narrow with cyclists, pedestrians and tour buses sharing it through the village main streets — this is not a road for making up time.
    • Wildlife, particularly possums and the occasional wallaby, is active at dusk on the bushland sections between villages. Avoid driving this route after dark if you can.
    • Fuel is limited between Maleny and Nambour — top up before you start the range drive rather than assuming a servo in Montville or Mapleton.
