    This is a destination itinerary, not a leg of the drive down from Perth — it's built for travellers who fly directly into Esperance, or who have already made the long drive via our Perth to Esperance: The South Coast Route guide and now want a proper base to explore from, rather than pushing straight back the way they came.

    Any 2WD. Esperance Airport has direct flights from Perth, and a hire car collected there covers everything in this itinerary — the Great Ocean Drive and Cape Le Grand's main road are both sealed.

    Esperance itself is the base for the whole five days. The Great Ocean Drive loops out from town along the coast, and Cape Le Grand National Park, about 50 km further east, is the genuine centrepiece — turquoise water, white sand and granite peaks that most visitors rate among the best coastal scenery in Australia.

    This coast is exposed to the Southern Ocean and the wind here is a real, near-constant planning factor, not an occasional inconvenience — check the forecast each morning and hold your walking and swimming plans loosely enough to swap days if a front comes through.

    Cost and booking notes

    • Cape Le Grand National Park requires a WA Parks entry pass, either a day pass or a holiday pass if you're visiting more than one WA national park on the same trip.
    • Esperance Airport has direct Perth flights, but frequency is lower than a capital-city route — book early for peak periods and confirm current schedules before locking in dates either side.
    • Esperance accommodation is limited relative to summer demand — book ahead for a December–January visit.

    Yes, if you can — Lucky Bay, Thistle Cove, Hellfire Bay and Frenchman's Peak are spread across a genuinely large park, and trying to see all of it in one day means picking one or two rather than properly slowing down at any of them.

    Conditions vary a lot with the wind and swell, which change quickly on this coast — Lucky Bay and Twilight Beach are generally the more sheltered options, but check conditions each day rather than assuming yesterday's calm water will still be there.
