7 Days: Perth & Rottnest Island Itinerary
Base yourself in central Perth — the Airport Line train runs directly from Perth Airport to Perth Station in around 15–20 minutes, one of the more genuinely convenient capital-city airport connections in the country, and the city's free CAT bus loops cover the CBD itself.

- A car is genuinely optional in Perth and unnecessary — private vehicles aren't permitted for general visitors on Rottnest Island itself, where cycling or the Island Explorer bus are the way around. Transperth's train and bus network, including a direct Airport Line into the city, covers Perth and Fremantle well; a hire car earns its keep only if you add a coastal day trip beyond the city.

Rottnest Island is the centrepiece, and it works as either a single day trip or a one-to-two-night stay — this plan builds in an overnight so you're not rushing the island in a few hours, but the day-trip version is entirely valid if time is tighter. Ferries run from both Fremantle (about 30 minutes) and Perth (about 90 minutes via the Swan River, with commentary along the way) — Fremantle is the shorter, usually cheaper option.

Cost and booking notes
- Rottnest ferry fares vary by departure point — Fremantle is typically the shorter and cheaper crossing, Perth the longer, scenic-river option. Compare both before booking.
- Bike hire on Rottnest can be booked with your ferry ticket or arranged on arrival; an e-bike costs more but covers the island's hillier sections with far less effort.
- Rottnest accommodation is limited and books out well ahead over summer and WA school holidays — secure it before the rest of this itinerary if an overnight stay is the plan.
