    7 Days in Perth & Rottnest Island: A Slow Week with an Island Overnight

    The unhurried version: a full week based in Perth, with a night on Rottnest Island so you're still there after the last day-trippers leave. It suits families who want a beach-and-pool rhythm, first-time visitors who'd rather not race the last ferry, and anyone with a week to spend in one place.

    Year-round. December–February is hot, dry and the most reliable for Rottnest and the beaches; June–August is Perth's wettest stretch. September–November and March–April are the most comfortable shoulder months, and Rottnest accommodation is easier to find then.

    No car needed for six of the seven days — trains, buses and ferries cover Perth, Fremantle and the Rottnest crossing, and visitors can't bring private cars onto the island. A one-day hire for Day 6 makes Hillarys or the Swan Valley easier, though both can be reached by public transport or on a tour.

    Base: Perth. Nearby destinations: Rottnest Island, Fremantle.

    Stay central. The Airport Line train runs from Perth Airport to Perth Station in about 15–20 minutes, and the free CAT buses loop around the CBD. Rottnest ferries leave from Fremantle (about 30 minutes) and from Perth via the Swan River (about 90 minutes, with commentary). Fremantle is the quicker option; the river trip makes the crossing part of the day out.

    Cost and booking notes

    • Rottnest's island admission fee is normally bundled into your ferry fare. Compare Fremantle and Perth departures, since the shorter Fremantle crossing is usually cheaper.
    • Island accommodation is limited and books out months ahead for summer and WA school holidays. Lock in the Rottnest night before booking the rest of the week.
    • If you only hire a car for Day 6, a city pick-up and return avoids airport surcharges and a week of parking fees.

    Common questions

    If you have the time, yes. An overnight lets you ride out to the West End and its seal lookout without watching the clock, and gives you the island's beaches in the early morning and evening, after the day-trippers have gone. A day trip covers the settlement end well, which is what our 5-day plan does.

    Not for most of it. Trains, buses, the CAT and the Rottnest ferries cover Days 1–5 and 7. A one-day hire on Day 6 makes Hillarys or the Swan Valley simpler, but it's optional.

    No — private vehicles aren't permitted for general visitors. Getting around is by bike, on foot, or via the Island Explorer bus, which is part of what keeps the island as quiet and car-free as it is.

    Hillarys Boat Harbour. AQWA is right there, the beach inside the harbour is calm and protected, and it's about half an hour from the city. That's why it's the family option on Day 6 of this plan.
